ABOUT “TRUE LOVE WILL FIND YOU IN THE END”

In collaboration with long-time friend and folk musician Benjamin Longman, Someone combines almost Red Garland style piano work with shimmering, chorused acoustic guitar and Longman’s equally lush and unsettling cello arrangement to create a performance that brims with longing, sorrow, but ultimately: comfort. Singing in unison, Jackson and Longman’s voices blend naturally into one and sound almost as if the recording were meant for nobody’s ears but Johnston’s own. A warm, glowing farewell on the threshold between this life and the next, a tribute to a brilliant artist and a kind soul.

“We recorded this track last November. I had just seen the powerful documentary “The Devil and Daniel Johnston” and this song just became stuck in my mind. It’s such a beautiful, fascinating blend of sorrow and hope, like a lonely tear, with a smile. Late one night, I went into the studio and laid down the guitar and vocal. Immediately, Ben’s beautiful cello work came to mind, so I gave him a call. Ben and I went to the BRIT school in London together as teenagers. We were best friends and even had a band, but then I moved to Amsterdam and he moved to Canada, so it’s hard to keep in touch sometimes. We re-connected over our love for Daniel Johnston’s work and decided we should make it a duet. This was the first time we’ve made music together in over 7 years and to me it feels like you can hear that in the recording. Two old friends, finding that familiar sweet spot of singing together again after so long. Except we’re on the other side of the world from each other now.
